The secret to creating goals that stick

There is nothing like this time of year to focus your thoughts on what you hope to achieve in the next 12 months. When that clock chimes midnight on New Year’s Eve we are filled with all the good intentions (well, apart from the wine!) to make next year the best yet…

Then what happens a month later when we’ve lost sight of our goals? We give ourselves a bloody hard time for the things we haven’t achieved (and out comes the wine again)!

I am definitely one who needs to remind herself that sometimes life doesn’t go to plan. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as your priorities can and do change over the course of a year… And while we want to set big goals to tick off to make the new year the best ever, what we often do is set ourselves up to fail.

Goal setting for 2019

In 2019 I encourage you to be more savvy in making sure the things you choose to do are what you want to do, not what you think you should do.

With that in mind, I’ve made it easier to keep an eye on your monthly goals. You’ll notice that the 1 Year Planner and the 6 Month Planner break down priorities at the start of every month. These are:

  • Home
  • Finances
  • Work
  • Family
  • Personal
  • Health

Monthly goals are great because:

  • They give you a time limit to take action
  • They can change each month depending on your priorities
  • They keep you motivated
  • They keep you focused on just a few goals…

By consistently focusing on these six areas of your life each month, you’ll start to make huge progress. Little by little, month by month, you’ll dedicate achievable chunks of time to each goal and stay on track better - rather than set yourself huge yearly goals that are too complex to tackle.

I secretly love this way of breaking things down into monthly goals as it gives me 12 options to change my mind! And that’s ok as each month can be something different depending on what's happening in your life at that moment. It's 12 times as satisfying!

Put yourself first

You’ll notice that the designs Fox & Moon creates in 2019 will shift from just weight loss to an overall focus on self-care and organisation. It’s so important to look after ourselves, not just from a weight loss angle, but from happiness, health, love, family, work and all things inbetween.

2019 will be about what you want and the steps you need to take make it happen.

So what standards are you going to set?

Self-care is not selfish and even if we don’t get the chance to relax in a bubble bath each night, we can still do small things for ourselves each and every day that help us feel good.

As the saying goes - you can’t pour from an empty cup, so I’ll be asking you how are going to take better care of yourselves over the coming year. And I'll be checking that you are holding yourself accountable for getting it in the diary and sticking to it.

The secret to creating goals that stick

Lastly, I’ve realised that the best way to achieve a goal is to pick one that you’ll know you’ll achieve. Whilst that sounds a little bit like cheating, what I mean by this is - a goal that is matched to your ‘why’ will be something you stick at until you get there.

If your ‘why’ is for the right reasons and it’s something that is linked to your overall health and happiness then you’ll find that it’s easier to do. For example, if you choose to run a marathon this year because you tell yourself that you are overweight but you hate running, then you’ll never do it. Picking a different form of exercise, like walking with friends, spin class or swimming will be more realistic if they are things you enjoy.

Here's to a satisfying 2019 filled with things that make you happy.

I'd love to know your thoughts on the lifestyle elements of the planners and whether you like the idea of a diary that helps you keep track of the many elements of your day, week, month and year. Drop me an email or leave a comment!
